Speech and Debate:A Season in Review

As the Talking Bruins exit their bus for competition the resounding cry of “Slay the Dragon!” can be heard from head coach Joanne Sherwood as she wishes each competitor good luck during the tournament. This is the familiar beginning to each tournament of the Montana Speech and Debate season in which hundreds of students compete in events as varied as the famously cutthroat Policy Debate to Duo Interpretation, whose finals round usually draws the largest crowd, and laughs.

Wrestling

Capital high’s wrestling season is in full swing and the Bruin wrestlers are proving a formidable force in this season. Seven seniors lead the team this year out of some 55 boys who tried out. The team is lead by coach James Sheridan, a teacher at C.R. Anderson. Some of the Bruin front runners this year include seniors Simon Asay, Steve Emge, and Alex Markle. Emge Is a junior And placed runner-up in 112 last year at Western AA divisionals and sophomore Markle placed 3rd in the 198 weight class.

If you saw the mass of people congregating at Capitals cafeteria and wandering around the school last month you witnessed Montana’s AA schools Speech and Debate teams, including Capital’s team. One of Capital High’s determined debaters at the tournament was Katie Anderson. Katie’s event is Public Forum Debate which “has to be the best event out there.”

Football Wrap up

The Bruins football team had an amazing season this year with an incredible record breaking winning streak of 33 games. As we have come to expect, we were once again surrounded by the Mohawk season this fall when the Bruins busted their way by claire into the State playoffs vying for their fourth consecutive title. Unfortunately, the Bruins came up short in their final match against the fierce CMR Rustlers.

Volleyball Review

This season, the Capital High Volleyball team improved from the the team they were last year. During practices, these girls worked hard and tried to get better every day. Caity Pilgeram, a senior on the volleyball team, is sad to be leaving the girls she got so close to this year. “Well, I think the season overall went pretty well.” Caity says.

Athletes in Action: Kelsey Grey

As always, Capital High’s hallways are filled with truly exceptional athletes this year. Kelsey Grey, a Senior, is just finishing up her last year as a Capital High Varsity soccer player. Since the tender age of four, Kelsey has been running up and down the soccer fields and has developed a real love and appreciation for the game. This year Grey served as a team Captain, lettered, and was chosen as an All State Soccer Player. Grey also held a place on the Bruins Varsity Basketball team beginning her freshman year.

Athletes in Action: Conlan Burk

The Capital High Golf season has recently come to a close, with Capital High’s senior golfer, Conlan Burk, as the Most Improved golfer. Along with the distinction of being the Most Improved, he placed 21st at state and fifth at Crosstown. He has earned three varsity letters in golf and stays busy with his studies and DECA. Burk was involved with sports from a young age.

Talking Bruins

The CHS speech and debate team mounted a frigid school bus embarking upon Butte, America. Some basic facts about speech and debate: each tournament the competitors compete against every AA school and some A schools. It is similar to a constant state tournament for sports teams. To be frank, the team basically rocked it. Claire McGuire placed 3rd in Extemporaneous speaking.

Golf Update

Capital High’s golf team this year took fifth for boys at state and the girls tied for eighth. This year, the girl’s team is very young with one senior, Kendra Silverthorne, and seven other younger girls. Amanda Roberts, Kaity Harrigton, Kasey Hoerning, Mariah Adsem, Ashley Pecora, Kaitlyn Skoog, and Nina Dalton make up the younger majority of Capital girls golf.

Sweet Sports Motivation: As fall sports are about to commence, it’s great to see student athletes playing sports simply for the love of the game!
