On January 27th Steve Jobs introduced Apple’s new “magic” and “revolutionary” tablet known as the Ipad. With this announcement, Jobs proclaimed that they had now introduced a piece of technology that would present a nearly perfect way to surf the Internet, view photos, and experience your music library. However, there did appear to be quite a few hang ups with the information provided in Jobs’ keynote, namely the lack of Flash capability.
This year DECA, a group within Capital High that competes in events that are geared towards business and technology, has shown itself to be a force to be reckoned with statewide. They have just recently competed in their national qualifying competition and have wrapped up their season with an incredible amount of success. According to Mrs. Conn, DECA’s adviser, 13 kids from Capital High placed first in their events.
n Tuesday January 26th Capital High seniors piled onto to buses, either at 8:15 or 10:15 depending on which government class they have, and were shipped off the the Historical Society to participate in Indian Education for All. This initiative requires schools to include some curriculum that deals with an understanding of Native American culture and modern practices.
Some may have noticed the very out of place unblemished white walls of the recently upgraded inner doorways over by the library entrance. This doorway was tacken down and rebuilt during the Christmas holiday and now runs a lot more in tune with the alarm system of the school.
Capital High School has received a $750 grant from the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance program, which will the science program at Capital High School.
Both Mr. Neiffer and Mr. Chancy of Capital High School have received grant checks this month. Mr. Chancy received his grant check from the ING Unsung Heroes Grant, and this helps fund millions of K-12 educators for innovative classroom projects. To earn this money, many classes are involved in a partnership with the Lewis and Clark County Historical Preservation Commission and are restoring Trolley Number Three. All of these classes are included in the grant.
The Swine!!! It’s the major topic of conversation this season, but really is it that big of a deal? There are 36,000 deaths a year due to the regular flu compared to the number of swine flu deaths which is around 3,000 so far. That is quite a marginal difference, and the CDC doesn’t expect there to be a major leap in that number by the end of the year, though they do expect it to go up by the same average it has been escalating at, still leaving it much lower than the flu number.
As per usual, the Senior All-Night Party will follow after graduation, on Saturday June 6th. The Senior All-Night Party this year will include prizes, food, dancing and a variety of other activities that are sure to be a good time. The party doors are open from 7:30 to 8:30, but make sure you arrive on time since after 8:30 no one is allowed to leave unless they are leaving for the night. The end of the party will finish up around 4:00 in the morning!
The search is on, and with this economy it can be very difficult to find a job. Especially for teenagers who don’t have as much experience in the work force as adults, who have been working their entire adult lives. The competition is fierce. If this is your first job, then you should start somewhere where you don’t need to have a lot of experience. Such as working at a grocery store,walking peoples dogs or mowing lawns. Picking a summer job mainly depends on how much money that you are wanting to bring in this summer. If you just need a little bit of extra cash then try babysitting or taking just a few hours at a store in downtown, which is a very fun place to work.
Pirates have jumped out of the screen and are now roaming the high seas. Somali pirates recently captured four ships, taking more than 60 crew members hostage in a crazy hijacking spree. This includes American ship Captain Richard Phillips, who offered himself as a hostage in place of his crew from the ship The Maersk Alabama. These pirates have now vowed revenge for the deaths of five of the pirates involved in the hostage situation. They were killed by U.S. snipers rescuing the Captain and also for two others slain by French forces.
