Zombie Land
by Sarah Yeakel
Who knew that a movie where flesh eating zombies overrun the world could be so hilariously funny? I will admit that when I first walked into the theatre and got my ticket, I was a little skeptical that this film was really going to be a comedy instead of a bloody horror flick. Well rest assured scaredy cats, because although this movie is full of stomach churning gore; it is still gut bustingly funny. Zombieland is a delightful little tale of two men (Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson) who have discovered how to survive in a world crawling with zombies. While one man’s goal is to find his family, the other plans to eat the last Twinkie on the earth. Together, along with two sassy sisters (Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin), these ridiculous heroes venture on a path where they will be faced with two choices: to work together or surrender to some hungry zombies. Throughout this entire movie, I could not stop laughing. Even at the most violent part, I could not keep it in. The fact that someone actually thought to create a film like this blows my mind. I mean, what a weird concept, right? Fortunately, it was executed very well by director Ruben Fleischer. Zombieland is one of those films where if it is not executed correctly then success at the box office is doubtful. Thankfully, that isn’t the case with this gem of a film. My favorite part of this film was definitely the 15 minute cameo, playing himself, by comedy legend Bill Murray. His appearance was so random and yet so wonderful all at the same time. The only negative thing I would have to say about this movie was that I felt that Eisenberg was trying too hard to be a Michael Cera (Superbad, Juno) character who is very socially awkward, especially around girls. There was only one scene where this acting trait stood out; however during the rest of the film Eisenberg had some great funny moments that were his moments, not those of another actor of his generation. All together this was a really enjoyable film. Because of the violence it might not be suitable for all viewers but if you have a strong stomach and a knack for hilarity within chaos. This is your movie!
